People's Summit of the Americas</b>
The Second People's Summit of the Americas, organised by the Hemispheric Social Alliance took place from 17-21 April 2001, in Quebec, Canada. This major civil society event brought together a large mobilisation (estimated at 60 000) of representatives from social movements, labour and civil society organisations and networks from all over South, Central (including Cuba) and North America on the occasion of the Third Summit of the Americas. Heads of government from 34 countries in the Americas (except Cuba, which was excluded), attended the official Summit determined to accelerate the pace for full implementation of the Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA), within 5 years. On the occasion of the Second People's Summit of the Americas, TNI introduced a new programme Alternative Regionalisms: Future Paradigms & Strategies in an Era of Globalisation" which is being jointly undertaken by the Transnational Institute (TNI)- The Netherlands, Focus on the Global South - Thailand, Alternative Information and Development Centre (IADC)-South Africa, Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analyses (IBASE)-Brazil, and Red Mexicana de Accion Frente al Libre Comercio (RMALC) and DECA Equipo Pueblo, in Mexico.
