Introduction

The United States and its allies invaded Iraq in order to control its oil resources, construct permanent bases in the country, and rip open Iraq and the entire Middle East to the free market and to free trade. Iraq's invasion was part of the United States' shift away from consensual or non-military forms of economic domination to one in which the imposition of neoliberal economic reforms is achieved by massive force. Now the ground-zero of the twin forces of globalization and militarization, Iraq demonstrates most lucidly how economic and geo-political motives, how state and corporate interests, drive war and globalization inseparably. Iraq, however, has also become the ground zero of the resistance to both forces. What is at stake in this ground zero? How does the struggle in Iraq affect the movement for 'another possible world'? How can the global anti-war and anti-globalization
movement contribute to the struggle for peace, justice, and genuine sovereignty in Iraq?
