Hacer o

Felipe Calderon of the conservative pro-US National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in as Mexico’s president after the Federal Tribunal rejected the opposition’s demand for a full recount of the votes, despite serious evidence of fraud. The legitimate government, argue the authors, is the people’s government established by the left, and the legitimate president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The success of the Brazilian Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), or Workers Party, acted as a beacon to the left worldwide. Now it has been revealed that it was governing on the basis of systematic corruption. Hilary Wainwright reports on how the quest for power perverted the PT and subverted democracy

Policy research working document by Daniel Chavez
On 31 October 2004 Uruguay will have a crucial election. According to recent polls a coalition of progressive parties and movements will win the national government. As a contribution to the programmatic debate and drawing on previous investigations on participatory democracy conducted by several researchers in the framework of TNI New Politics Project, Daniel Chavez prepared a working document towards the creation of a nation-wide participatory budgeting system. With supporting research by economists, lawyers and social scientists from Delaraiz, an Uruguayan co-operative of young researchers, a comprehensive proposal is expected to be ready before the end of November. Delaraiz's work is being supported by TNI Young Fellows Programme.

Report on the conference The New Latin American Left: Origins and Future Trajectory. The dissatisfaction with the disastrous neo-liberal policies in Latin America and the failure of democratic reforms have pushed people to rethink their political strategies and the new wave of Left governments and movements has spread throughout the region. Representatives of movements and parties from ten Latin American countries gathered at the conference "The New Latin American Left: Origins and Future Trajectory", organised by TNI and the Haven's Center at the University of Wisconsin. Patrick Bond reports.
