Vacancy for Web Editor

The Transnational Institute (TNI) is looking for a Web Editor to be based out of its offices in Amsterdam. S/he will have responsibility for the maintenance, promotion and development of TNI’s website(s), including our associated bi-weekly e-newsletter.

We are looking for a dynamic, creative and experienced native English-speaking electroniconline communications specialist. Candidates must have a good eye for detail; the ability to write quick, enticing, accurate summaries of long documents on complex issues; and be creative and strategic in promoting TNI online.

The ideal candidate will feel a strong affinity for TNI’s progressive political stance, take an acute interest in the content of all our programmes, have good media and political instincts, and strong editorial capacity.

The Web Editor will be part of TNI’s communication team which is responsible for the Institute’s external communications including its online presence, profile in the media, publications and promotion thereof. She/he will work under the supervision of the Communications Manager.

We are offering an initial one year contract on a part-time basis (32hrs), starting 1 May 2010 or as close to that date as possible.

The (before income tax) salary for this post will be between Euro 2,045 and Euro 2,132 per month, depending on experience. Main tasks and responsibilities:

Web-related tasks

- Monitor and upload the output of the Institute, including from programmes, Fellows and associates
- Maintain the individual web pages for TNI Fellows
- Monitor and upload citations of TNI in the media
- Maintain a fresh and dynamic look for the TNI homepage
- Regularly develop new online features (i.e. how to package relevant material and where and how to present or promote it)
- Promote TNI and its outputs through social networking sites, blogosphere, etc.
- Work with TNI's technical provider and other communications staff to  continually improve the functionality, effectiveness and design of TNI's website
- Train relevant staff in the use of the website's Content Management System (Drupal)
- Regularly collect and analyse statistics on TNI web traffic and e-list subscribers, including the development of benchmarks and targets to help guide the Communication Unit’s strategies
- Promote TNI and its outputs through social networking sites, blogosphere, etc.


Editorial tasks

- Maintain regular contact with TNI staff, Fellows and associates regarding new content
- Prepare the fortnightly TNI News aimed at attracting visitors to the website
- Write introductions to different sections on the website
- Write enticing summaries of documents uploaded to the website
- Liaise with translation staff where Spanish versions of introductions and summaries are required
- Taking the lead with the Communications team in proposing priority content for the website
Maintenance of the TNI digital photo archive

Other communications support work as required

Qualifications and experience required:

Essential

- Native English language speaker
- Experience of using a Content Management System
- Minimum two years’ relevant work experience
- Excellent written skills
- Excellent inter-personal communications
- Ability to quickly scan and accurately summarise long documents
- Ability to work well with little supervision, under pressure and to deadlines

Desirable

- Knowledge of Spanish and Dutch
- Knowledge of Drupal
- Experience in web 2.0 technologies, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc
- Ability to use web analytics tools, and produce relevant analysis
