Does the greatest financial crisis since the Wall Street crash of 1929 mean that the 'capitalism as we know it' has reached its end? TNI panelists analyse the causes and consequences of the on-going global financial crisis and discuss its profound implications for a changed world order.

The greatest financial crisis since the Wall Street crash of 1929 has been met by an unprecedented set of government actions to stem the tide of destruction. But is there also a coming sea change in economic theory and practice, as well as in politics, in the shift from a free market to intervention in the market? Is this the end of 'capitalism as we know it? What are the power politics and prospects to achieve change? What are the alternatives to these catastrophically failed ideas behind the 'neoliberal globalization' and 'corporate globalisation?

Howard Wachtel

Catedrático honorario de Economía de la American University

Howard Wachtel es un experto en la financiarización de la economía mundial que predijo la crisis financiera mucho antes de que ésta se desencadenara con fuerza en otoño de 2008. Su libro Street of Dreams. Boulevard of Broken Hearts: Wall Street's First Century (Londres: Pluto Press), publicado en 2003, es muy respetado por su análisis de esta calle neoyorquina.

Howard fue el primer coordinador del programa Economía Global del TNI, período durante el que publicó, entre otros, su famoso The Money Mandarins: The Making of a New Supranational Economic Order (Pantheon, 1986).

Catedrático de Economía y director del Centro de Estudios Israelíes (CIS) de la American University de Washington, Howard trabaja sobre cuestiones como economía mundial y capital internacional, trabajo y economía estadounidense, y la transformación económica de las economías centralizadas de Europa Oriental y Central, la antigua Unión Soviética y el Tercer Mundo. Es también editor adjunto de la revista especializada Journal of Economic Integration.

Myriam vander Stichele

Investigadora sénior del Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO)

Myriam Vander Stichele lleva desde 1990 investigando las negociaciones y los acuerdos comerciales internacionales, tanto a escala mundial como regional. Myriam es asesora de muchas ONG, cuyas exhaustivas investigaciones sobre los acuerdos y las políticas de inversiones, así como las estrategias de inversión privada, han generado muchas campañas internacionales.

Licenciada en Historia y doctorada en Relaciones Internacionales por la Universidad de Cambridge, el trabajo de investigación de Myriam se centra muy especialmente en el sector de las finanzas, la alimentación y los supermercados, así como en las estrategias empresariales y la liberalización de servicios en estos campos.

Susan George

Investigadora asociada y presidenta de la Junta del TNI y presidenta honoraria de Attac-Francia [Asociación por una Tasa sobre las Transacciones especulativas para Ayuda a los Ciudadano].

Susan George es una de las investigadoras más renombradas del TNI por sus innovadores análisis sobre problemas mundiales. Autora de 14 libros traducidos a numerosos idiomas, habla de su trabajo con convicción; una convicción que comparte con todo el TNI: “La tarea del científico social responsable es, en primer lugar, desvelar esas fuerzas [de la riqueza, el poder y el control]; en segundo lugar, escribir con claridad sobre ellas (…) con el fin de que las personas corrientes tengan instrumentos adecuados para la acción; y, por último (…) adoptar una posición de defensa de los desfavorecidos, los desamparados, las víctimas de la injusticia”.
