Coca is not Cocaine!
The coca leaf has been chewed and brewed for tea for centuries in the Andean region without causing harm and is probably beneficial to human health. Yet the leaf is treated by UN drug conventions like cocaine or heroin. Bolivia's recent withdrawal from the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs over coca's classification is just the latest signal that we need radical reform of the current international drugs regime.

Treaty guardians in distress
Martin Jelsma
The guardian of the UN drug control treaties has proved unable to respond in a rational manner to the need for radical reform of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.

Bolivia’s legal reconciliation with the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drug
IDPC Advocacy Note
On 29 June 2011, the Bolivian government denounced the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs as amended by the 1972 Protocol, indicating its intention to re-accede with a reservation allowing for the traditional use of the coca leaf.

Coca Leaf: Myths and Reality
A primer
Many myths surround coca. Every day press accounts around the world use the word coca in their headlines, when they refer in fact to cocaine. TNI's Drugs and Democracy Team expose the myths and reality surrounding the coca leaf.
Coca is not Cocaine
Thomas Grisaffi
Bolivian congress' vote to withdraw from the most important international legal framework for drug control created great unease in international government and policy circles. Claims were made that Bolivia had caved into pressure from drug traffickers. Meanwhile the UN Office on Drugs and Crime classified it as ‘worrying'. But there are very good reasons to abandon the convention.
Mixed thoughts about the INCB's latest report
Martin Jelsma
In March this year The International Narcotics Control Board released its annual report. It seems to persist in a negative stance towards harm reduction and decriminalization, and questions are rising about the Board's tendency to overstep its mandate.

Greece’s Woes: So Goes the Euro
Howard Wachtel
The Greek crisis has exposed the fundamental flaws in the Euro project: it stripped countries control over the price of money and allowed political elites to undermine Europe's post-war social contract.

Myriam vander Stichele
Until the European Commission shows it has learnt the lessons of the 2008 financial crisis and demonstrates the political will to re-regulate the financial sector, it will be unable to resolve the crises in Greece, Ireland and Portugal

Acabemos con el control financiero en la gobernanza europea

La crisis europea es señal evidente de que hay que librarse de la camisa de fuerza económica impuesta por el Tratado de Lisboa, el Banco Central Europeo y el poderoso sector financiero.
