The Peace Movement And The Middle East

Bush launches a new Middle East initiative
Middle East peace is at hand. Again.

Phyllis Bennis
The latest Bush plan for a regional peace conference in the Middle East has been met with disdain. Underlying it, however, is a broader US ideological framing that sees the Middle East conflict as an existential struggle between 'moderates' and 'extremists'. Phyllis Bennis sets out a more subtle distinction between the various strands of Islamist strategy, and argues that the global peace movement should follow a boycott, divestment and sanctions strategy towards Israel.

A movement alive and struggling for new strategies
A Response to Alexander Cockburn

Phyllis Bennis
The US peace movement is alive and well, and has helped to ensure that 70 per cent of the US population is now against the Iraq war. This movement's strength is in focusing on the costs of war and occupation, writes Phyllis Bennis, but this does not mean it should follow Alexander Cockburn's suggestion that it embrace the 'Iraqi resistance'.

Global Outlook

Pakistan at a crossroads
Praful Bidwai
The current crisis in Pakistan has been fuelled by Musharraf's disastrous misjudgement in sacking Chief Justice Chaudhry and his hesitance and appeasement in dealing with the Lal Masjid militants. But they also reveal some more deep-rooted contradictions in the country's political process. With elections on the horizon, any democratic government will need to deal with the tensions between Islam as Pakistan's official religion and the requirements of a modern, culturally diverse society, as well as the imbalance between military and civilian power and gross disproportions in the regional distribution of power.

A Beneficial Crisis for All
Boris Kagarlitsky
The seemingly serious crisis in British-Russian relations over the extradition of a Russian agent wanted by Britain has been provoked by domestic political expediency. Both sides got what they wanted - new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown could be seen "acting tough", while the Russian elites were able to switch the debate to the country's position in the world.
