FOCUS ON GAZA

Long-term Middle East observer and TNI fellow Phyllis Bennis is one of the most insightful analysts of Israel’s attacks on Gaza:

Israel's illegal airstrikes against the population of Gaza have little to do with protecting Israeli civilians, and more to do with internal Israeli politics and taking punitive action whilst Bush is still US President.

Video: Israel's illegal attacks against the population of Gaza could not have happened without the military and diplomatic support of the US.

Video: Certain key members of the UN have spoken out against Israeli violations of international law, but the power structure of the Security Council continues to make definitive action impossible.

Richard Falk, professor of international law at Princeton University, is UN special rapporteur for the Occupied Palestine Territories. He was recently detained by Israel who refused to allow him to undertake his work in Gaza and deported him.

The people of Gaza are victims of US and regional geopolitics at its inhumane worst: producing what Israel itself calls a 'total war' against an essentially defenceless society.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war

From the ashes of Gaza
Tariq Ali
In the face of Israel's latest onslaught, the only acceptable alternative is a single state for Jews and Palestinians alike, in which the exactions of Zionism are repaired.

The Coming Capitalist Consensus
Walden Bello
Economic and political elites from Prime Minister Gordon Brown to Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz are converging on Global Social Democracy as a solution to the current economic crisis. But we need more than better social management of the current financial system: we should aspire to participatory democratic control of both the national and global economy.

A revolution without borders: reappraising Bolivia’s crisis
Samuel Grove and Pablo Navarrete
Western commentators tend to dismiss internal conflicts in Bolivia as signs of a “failed state”. This helps obscure the “threat of a good example,” in other words important economic and political democratic changes that the Bolivian government is daring to introduce despite opposition from conservative elites.

Bases, empire and global response: Introduction
Catherine Lutz
There are over nine hundred US military bases around the world, which have a devastating political, environmental, and economic impact on the surrounding communities across the globe. This free downloadable introduction from the book traces the network of US bases, and describes the campaigns to hold the US accountable for the damage its bases cause in the host countries.

EU Land Policy and the Right to Food
Pascal Bergeret
EU Land Policy Guidelines developed in 2004 contain clear and progressive recommendations to governments and donors to develop policies that defend small-scale family agriculture, and prioritise participation of organisations and movements of poor landless and land-insecure in developing land policies. Although formally endorsed at the highest levels of EU governance (Commission, Council and Parliament), the lack of promotion of the guidelines shows that these guidelines are not actually owned by the EU system and many member countries.

Global perspectives

India's new anti-terror laws draconian say activists
Praful Bidwai
Following the late November terror attacks in Mumbai, the Indian government has rushed through two laws that limit fundamental liberties, will increase detentions without trial, and is likely to lead to greater disaffection amongst India’s Muslim population.

Wisdom of restraint
Praful Bidwai
Post-Mumbai, India’s focus on diplomatic initiatives rather than military belligerence is an important recognition of the political fragility of the Pakistan government in tackling extremists.

Pakistan and the Islamist challenge
Zia Mian and A.H. Nayyar
The murderous assault on Bombay by Islamist militants means that Pakistan and its neighbours, together with the international community, must work together to confront the risk of Pakistan spiralling into chaos and collapse.

It is ironic that, while the US economy is disintegrating, The New York Times Magazine decides to publish a report on the demise of Cuba's socialist economy.

The Russian government's brutal suppression of protests against raising import tariffs on second-hand foreign cars will only lead to politicisation of discontent that will embrace wider sectors of society.

In 90 minutes, why couldn’t Frontline have presented the other side of the story on Chavez?

Laia Bertran Casanellas y Moritz Tenthoff
