Nuclear proliferation, Dutch style
Project Butter Factory
Henk Slebos and the A.Q. Khan nuclear network Frank Slijper Project Butter Factory tells the story of Henk Slebos, A.Q. Khan and the failed international effort to control nuclear proliferation. It is a story of how the drive for profit, competing political interests and weak regulations in the Netherlands allowed the export of dual-use nuclear components to continue unchecked. The Slebos case is a clear example of the failed international effort to control nuclear proliferation. If lessons are to be learnt, writes Frank Slijper, then it is high time for the reform of the system governing dual-use exports at EU level, and for the existing nuclear powers to stop turning a blind eye to proliferation and start serious disarmament.

In a Foreword to "Project Butter Factory", Zia Mian argues that nuclear proliferation has always been a multi-nation effort, and weapons have invariably been developed without popular knowledge. More states will become nuclear powers unless we move purposefully towards ending the nuclear age.

Global Outlook
From "constitution" to "reform" or from bad to worse Susan George
The European elites have never digested the French and Dutch 'No' votes on the Constitution and now they are striking back with the so-called "Reform Treaty". This latest treaty, being pushed through with unseemly haste so that European citizens cannot interfere, is just as complicated, just as neo-liberal, just as unjust as the defunct Constitution it replaces.

Beyond 'Green Shopping' John Cavanagh and Jerry Mander The response of most politicians and corporations to climate change is that new technologies and "green consumerism" will solve the problems. Shooting messengers Mariano Aguirre
A major reason that the US government, the US political establishment, and ordinary US citizens don't have a clear picture of the Israel/Palestine crisis is that any criticism or complaint about Israel - no matter how well-researched and moderate - is swiftly attacked as anti-Semitic by lobbies in the United States.
