How to manufacture a global food crisis: lessons from the World Bank, IMF, and WTO
Walden Bello
The global rise in food prices is not only a consequence of using food crops to produce biofuels, but of the "free trade" policies promoted by international financial institutions. Now peasant organisations are leading the opposition to a capitalist industrial agriculture.

La Vía Campesina and its global campaign for agrarian reform
Saturnino M. Borras Jr

Europe deserves much better than the Lisbon Treaty
Susan George
We must avoid adopting an ill-conceived charter that places too much faith in the market and a US-led Nato.

Global outlook stories

The NATO axiom: 2 + 2 = 5
Saul Landau
NATO has become absurd in the post Cold War world, with global warming and food shortages transcending the antiquated security notions associated with armies. It is high time to disband this old and costly military alliance.

Ten years of the Bomb
Zia Mian
In the 10 years since the May 1998 nuclear weapons tests by India and Pakistan, the bomb has largely faded from view in South Asia. But the nuclear logic continues to unfold relentlessly.

Tibet, Palestine and the politics of failure
Fred Halliday
Why do some countries achieve independence and not others? The key factor is "post-colonial sequestration syndrome", argues Fred Halliday, who connects the experience of aspirants to statehood with the moment of international power-politics which enmeshes them.

Shock tactics
John Gittings
The Chinese authorities will be wondering whether the vast dams currently under construction can stand up to a major earthquake

Beyond water wars: lessons on forming collaborative governance from Cochabamba
Travis Driessen
The water war in Cochabamba, Bolivia, provided some of the first shots against privatisation of water services heard around world, but necessary institutional and cultual changes, as opposed to symbolic restructuring of the board of the public service institution, have not yet happened.

Vive la revolution!
Praful Bidwai
The issues raised by the May 1968 upheavals in France and elsewhere about the iniquities of capitalism and the need for a just alternative have not gone away.

Cuba: the struggle continues
Saul Landau
Cubans are trying to preserve the gains of the revolution in the face of US hostility.

Communism's new crisis
Boris Kagarlitsky
The failures of the European left do not derive from the lack of popular support, but from the absence of a programme which could transform that support into a new political reality.

Labour code as an instrument of social revolution
Boris Kagarlitsky
The Russian labour code, written to suit the interests of employers, has pushed workers to unite and oppose its draconian terms.

Two-headed eagle infected with bugs
Boris Kagarlitsky
The world recession might ruin Putin's intricate plans to maintain control of the country from his new position as prime minister.

The illustrious Gandhian legacy
Praful Bidwai
With the death of Nirmala "Didi" Deshpande, India has lost its last great Gandhian.

Power-sharing and the implications for state restructuring in Kenya
Antony Otieno Ong'ayo
The coalition government in Kenya, brokered by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, has been widely welcomed for bringing peace to Kenya, but the initiative is not without its problems.

Entrevista a Claudia Torrelli del Tribunal Permanente de los Pueblos
Yásser Gómez entrevista a Claudia Torrelli
