A group of scientists, military officials and government bureaucrats signed an informal pact with the devil. The contract became public in August 1945, when U.S. bombers nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Since then, no other nation has used a nuclear weapon, but thousands of radiation-emitting tests have occurred and nuclear energy plants mushroomed, with promises of cheap, safe and clean power.

On Monday morning we went to the two locations where the wakes were being held for the two teachers who were killed in the last few days. One teacher was shot on Thursday, and died on Saturday from gunshot wounds to the head. Another was stabbed on his way home from the Saturday wake. At the press conference/rally which was held before his funeral, teachers declared that they would strike all week this week to protest the deaths of these two teachers.

The situation in Honduras and Central America is growing increasingly tumultuous with each passing day as deposed President Manuel Zelaya confronts the de facto regime of Roberto Micheletti with thousands of partisans mobilizing in the border areas. While Honduran army officers in Washington and the capital of Tegucigalpa issue statements indicating they may accept Zelaya’s return—if the civilian coup leaders concur—military and police units continue to fire on and even murder demonstrators. It is impossible to predict the outcome of this confrontation.
