The Indigenous populations of the Peruvian Amazonia started a general and peaceful strike for almost 60 days to protest against 10 legislative decrees promoted by the Peruvian Government in order to comply with the Free trade Agreement (FTA) with US that threatens their rights and their environment. More specifically, the FTA with the US permits oil and mining companies to enter 44 out of 75 million hectares of Amazonian forest, which are Indigenous territories, without any kind of agreement or even consultation.

This letter was delivered by hand to Robert B. Zoellick, president of the World Bank and the Acting Secretary General of International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) as Telefonica, Telecom Italia, and ETI.

The People’s Summit “Linking Alternatives 3” begin its activities today (13 May), finishing in four days time on 16 May in the National University of Engineering in Lima, Peru. The summit will be made up of several simultaneous forums along with artistic and musical events at the end of each day.
The debates will question the current neoliberal model and its proposals of asymmetric integration. It will also challenge the poverty, discrimination, environmental contamination, and repression of social movements that this model generates.
