We, over 500 women and men, representing people’s organisations and citizens from Asia and Europe joined together in Beijing at the 7th Asia Europe People’s Forum to work ‘For Social and Ecological Justice.’ We focussed on developing strategies and recommendations to our elected representatives, and to ourselves, as active citizens, for ‘Peace and Security,’ ‘Social and Economic Rights, and Environmental Justice’ and ‘Participatory Democracy and Human Rights.’

Your Excellency, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have the pleasure of conveying to you the spirit of Helsinki from the 6th Asia Europe People´s Forum which was held in September 2006. At this moment the whole world is feeling the consequences of an unprecedented collapse of the financial system. AEPF has consequently promoted the replacement of blind pro-market policies by alternative people-centred policies.

We noted in Helsinki that ASEM countries control over half of the world´s gross national product.

AEPF 7 – Clusters

The AEPF is organised around three clusters comprising the Forum’s major themes:

  • Peace and Security
  • Sustainable Social and Economic Rights, and Environmental Justice
  • Participatory Democracy and Human Rights

Each theme will be tackled in two sessions: plenaries and workshops. The plenary sessions will deal with general, overarching issues. And the workshop sessions shall focus on a deeper and detailed discussion of themes.

The IOC and NOC jointly plan the content of the Forum.
