Cumbre de los Pueblos Chile 2013
The People’s Summit held in Santiago Chile focused on the themes of Social Justice, International Solidarity and the Defense of the Commons. The Summit was organised in parallel to the EU-Latin America (CELAC) official summit where bi-regional investment dominated the agenda.
The agenda of the People’s Summit on the other hand takes two main departure points: 1) the deepening economic and financial crisis in Europe and its implications for relations with Latin America & Caribbean countries and 2) the 40th Anniversary of the Pinochet Coup in Chile, the overthrow of the democratically elected Allende government and the imposition of the first neoliberal economic model.

The perspectives and voices of social movement leaders and campaigners have been captured in a series of video and radio interviews made by Transnational Institute (TNI) and Real World Radio (FOEI) and posted below. The interviews provide an analysis of the deepening crisis of the capitalist model and on the marketisation of nature and life as well as projecting the resistances and alternatives emerging from the people.

The struggles of women against the dominant economic-political model
On the second day of activities of the Summit of the Peoples that took place in Santiago de Chile in parallel to the EU-CELAC Summit, several social movements and organizations met in the morning to discuss two main issues: the women’s movement in charge of economic integration processes and feminism-building processes. The speaker’s table was made up by representatives of feminist movements, environmentalist organizations, peasants and indigenous movements.
