Cumbre de los Pueblos Chile 2013

18 January 2013

The People’s Summit held in Santiago Chile focused on the themes of Social Justice, International Solidarity and the Defense of the Commons. The Summit was organised in parallel to the EU-Latin America (CELAC) official summit where bi-regional investment dominated the agenda.

The agenda of the People’s Summit on the other hand takes two main departure points: 1) the deepening economic and financial crisis in Europe and its implications for relations with Latin America & Caribbean countries and 2) the 40th Anniversary of the Pinochet Coup in Chile, the overthrow of the democratically elected Allende government and the imposition of the first neoliberal economic model.

TNI’s participation in the People’s Summit focused on the themes of Corporate Power & Investment and the Financialisation of Nature which have been debated in two Seminars co-organised with Friends of the Earth International, Ecologistas en Acción, World March of Women, CLOC-Via Campesina America, Jubilee South Americas, Centro Martin Luther King, COMPA-Convergencias de los Movimientos de los Pueblos de las Americas, Plataforma Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, Democracia y Desarrollo, Solidaridad Suecia America Latina (SAL), Coordinadora Andina de Organizaciones Indigenas (CAOI) and Hemispheric Social Alliance (HSA) among others.

The perspectives and voices of social movement leaders and campaigners have been captured in a series of video and radio interviews made by Transnational Institute (TNI) and Real World Radio (FOEI) and posted below. The interviews provide an analysis of the deepening crisis of the capitalist model and on the marketisation of nature and life as well as projecting the resistances and alternatives emerging from the people.
