Invitation to the book release in Kerala

Invitation Water Kerala Network is pleased to invite you to the book release and interactive discussion to be held at AVARD Bhavan Chalakudy at 4.p.m on 29^th April, 2007 in connection with the 'Reclaiming Public Water India Speaking Tour' a Program of the Transnational Institute based in Amsterdam going on in India since 22 ^nd April 2007. Reclaiming Public Water is a global network of water activists, civil society campaigners, trade unionists, water experts, water professionals and academics that have joined together in the call for public water. The network was formed in 2005, in recognition that privatisation was failing to deliver water to those who needed it most and that a new vision was needed. The network has produced a book entitled 'Reclaiming Public Water' which contains a number of case studies of water struggles around the world to reclaim water in public hands. The book has been translated into a number of languages, and in April 2007 is being launched in India in three different Indian languages. Four members of the global network have travelled to India as part of a speaker tour to launch the book and also to meet with activists and decision makers, to share experiences and learning and to promote public water for all. Two of the speakers would address a public meeting at Plachimada on the 29^th morning where the *Anti Coca Cola Water Rights struggle* is going on followed by the book release and interactive discussion at AVARD Bhavan, Chalakudy at 4.p.m., the focal town of the *Struggle for river rights, the Athirappilly dam issue*. The first copy of the book will be received by Ammini and Janaki, the two women at the forefront of the Athirappilly dam struggle. About the International Speakers in Brief Santiago Arconada, advisor to the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been working on improving public water utility through the Water Technical Tables, Caracas, Venezuela Olivier Hoedeman (Dutch, MA Political Science), is the research and campaign co-ordinator at Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO), an Amsterdam-based civil society group targeting the threats to democracy, equity, social justice and the environment posed by the economic and political power of corporations and their lobby groups. Objectives of the Interaction 1. Exposure to international experiences on water struggles and reclaiming public water 2. To discuss other policy options beyond privatisation especially the new public water approaches developed in Latin America 3. To discuss possibilities of future cooperation 4.
