The Public Services Yearbook

The TNI Public Services Project is aimed at monitoring public services reforms and performance internationally, through two intertwined products: (1) a web-based database offering objective and updated information organised by sector, region and country; and (2) an annually published global report.

The "Public Services Yearbook" will be published in English and in Spanish as a book and as a CD-ROM. The 2005/6 edition will be published in January 2006. TNI will produce and distribute it in co-operation with Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) at the University of Greenwich.

The yearbook will include a section consisting of twelve national reports from both North and South, which will present an overview of major recent changes observed on the nature, ownership, governance and coverage of public services on selected countries. There will be another section consisting of thematic reports on six basic services (education, health, housing, electricity, water and social welfare), which will present an in-depth review of major international trends in each of the public services considered. And there will be another 'theoretical' section, which will include innovative and useful contributions to the overall debate on public policy. Each report will be authored by individual researchers or organisations with proven expertise in the field of public services.

Besides the narrative reports there will be a statistical section (the basis for the global database) with detailed information about public services in more than 120 countries, based on a set of indicators jointly developed and researched by PSIRU and a team of Uruguayan researchers and journalists based in Montevideo.

The Spanish edition of the Yearbook, Más allá del mercado: El futuro de los servicios públicos, will be launched at the 6th World Social Forum in Caracas, Venezuela. The English edition is expected in February.
