The Marikana massacre
The recent massacre of striking miners in South Africa has captured international headlines for weeks now. South Africa is, by all accounts, the world’s richest country in terms of the value of its mineral resources. In 2010 these were valued at $2.5–$4.5 trillion.
Mining is a lucrative business opportunity right now. The demand for commodities for the growing economies of China, India and Brazil is high. Even recession-hit Europe needs coal to feed its power stations and platinum for its auto industries. The South African government is banking on mining as the country's route to development. What then are the implications of the Marikana massacre?
