The Marikana massacre

The recent massacre of striking miners in South Africa has captured international headlines for weeks now. South Africa is, by all accounts, the world’s richest country in terms of the value of its mineral resources. In 2010 these were valued at $2.5–$4.5 trillion.

Mining is a lucrative business opportunity right now. The demand for commodities for the growing economies of China, India and Brazil is high. Even recession-hit Europe needs coal to feed its power stations and platinum for its auto industries. The South African government is banking on mining as the country's route to development. What then are the implications of the Marikana massacre?

TNI is pleased to invite you to a briefing on the topic in our attic on Monday 17 September 2012 from 16h00 to 17h30 (followed by drinks). The briefing will be given by Brian Ashley, editor of Amandla magazine, the foremost forum for independent progressive debate in South Africa. See www.amandla.org.za.

Please RSVP by sending an email to hildevanderpas@tni.org or indicate that you are joining on our facebook page.
