Race and territorial politics in land policy reform in Burma

Burma's current neoliberal reform is gearing up to transform the country's smallholder agrarian landscape and society into an agribusiness investment opportunity. The talk will demonstrate how the making of agro-capitalism in Burma is borne through violent regional histories defined by contested and racialized territorial politics. The transition to industrial food regimes involves a shift from the use of guns and fear to dispossess smallholders of their land and farming livelihoods to that of the logic of law and markets, backed by police force.

Many economists identify inequalities as one of the key “fault lines” in the global economy,... Read more

A vitally important issue that has altogether fallen off India’s economic-political discourse is growing economic inequality. In part, this is because of the continuing hangover of the euphoria generated by economic liberalisation, and the growth of social-Darwinist ideas and moral indifference towards the poor within our burgeoning middle class. In part, this also reflects India’s Rightward... Read more

Read more
