Transnational Institute presents Transformative Cities
How do citizens solve global problems with local solutions? With a.o. Saskia Sassen, Rutger Groot Wassink and Laura Flanders.
On the evening of June 8, TNI invites you to celebrate peoples' radical local solutions to global problems. Last month we launched the Transformative Cities 2018: People’s Choice Award for which you can vote, complimenting radical people-led initiatives to spread the stories of these inspiring communities working on real alternatives. We focused on communities working on local solutions for water, energy & housing and compiled 32 inspiring stories from 19 countries, featured in the Atlas of Utopias.
For this event, the Transnational Institute brings together leading thinkers and practitioners within this radical municipalist movement to debate and discuss opportunities and challenges for transforming our communities. Can this transformation at a local level deliver solutions to systemic global crises such as inequality, climate change and the corporate capture of democratic institutions?
At the heart of this evenings' debate are the new citizens coalitions whom are gaining municipal power from Barcelona and Madrid to Jackson, Mississippi; embracing the term ‘fearless’ to show their willingness to take on entrenched power.
This movement is gaining ever more momentum: since 2000, at least 835 examples of public services have been being brought back under public control, reversing decades of privatization programs that did not deliver the promised results.
Please register for this event in advance on the website of Pakhuis de Zwijger.
