Foreign Military Bases
The International Network Against Foreign Military Bases
Since 2003, many activists and grass roots organisations worldwide have set out to join forces to challenge the existing world wide network of over 1000 foreign military bases, mainly operated by the US and - to a lesser extend - EU member countries.
The aim of this campaign is to in the end abolish all bilaterally agreed foreign military presence. The immediate aims of the campaign include raising awareness about, and promote internationally binding regulation of the environmental, social, gender related, economic and political damage caused by foreign military bases.
Over the past three years, the NO-BASES Network has been gaining strength. From scratch, it grew to include over 225 participating local and international organisations that exchange information on bases, and actions against bases via an e-list and a web site .
The joint projects, research and plans are discussed in annual meetings, held during the World Social Forums and regional social forums.
The goal for 2006 is to finalise the 'mapping and outreach', trying to contact as many sympathetic organisations world wide as possible, to further develop the web site as a tool for dissemination of information and finally the preparation of the International Gathering for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases to be held in Quito, Equador, in March 2007
