Each one of these breakthroughs was many years in the making. These are Ideas with Impact.

  2. Praful Bidwai Memorial Award

    The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award is intended to honour and highlight courageous and independent voices in journalism. The Award was conferred on the Peoples Archive of Rural India at a public event in New Delhi on 23 June. Praful Bidwai, regarded by many as one of the best investigative journalists South Asia has produced, died tragically in Amsterdam on 23 June 2015. His friends, including the Transnational Institute, created this award to honour his legacy.

  3. Campaign for The Praful Bidwai Memorial Trust

    Friends of Praful Bidwai have started a crowdfunding campaign to honour his legacy, aiming to find funding for various activities, among which translations of parts of his work in vernacular Indian languages, promotion for his last book, and providing a new  annual prize to promising young investigative journalists in South Asia. 

  4. Todas Las Manos

    Todas Las Manos is a five part or "Pentaptych" installation. Each panel functions individually as well as a part of the larger composition. The panels are numbered from right to left. The mural celebrates human rights and global justice and serves in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Chilean Ambassador Orlando Letelier (the artists father) and co-worker Ronni Karpen Moffitt who were killed in Washington, DC on September 21, 1976. Forty years after the car bombing that took their lives, the pursuit of justice for Orlando, Ronni and other victims of the Pinochet regimes continues.

    Since 2018 TNI has been granted the maximum rating of five stars by Transparify. The rating shows that TNI is “highly transparent” about its funding sources, shows all its donors, and clearly identifies funding amounts and sources of funding for particular projects.

    The Transnational Institute (TNI) was founded in 1974 as the international programme of the Washington DC-based Institute for Policy Studies. For more than 40 years, TNI’s history has been entwined with the history of global social movements and their struggle for economic, social and environmental justice.

    In 2005, TNI had much to celebrate. Europe was a major theme for TNI in 2005, given the constitutional debates and referendums. TNI took this as its theme for the annual fellows meeting, hosted an international seminar on the construction of Europe, and published research on the distorting influence of Europe’s multinational corporations on security policy and sustainable development.

  11. The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award 2018

    The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award is intended to honour and highlight courageous and independent voices in journalism. The 2018 Award was conferred on Ulka Mahajan, one of the three founders of Sarvahara Jan Andolan. Praful Bidwai, regarded by many as one of the best investigative journalists South Asia has produced, died tragically in Amsterdam on 23 June 2015. His friends created this award to honour his legacy. Praful was a TNI Fellow and a regular visitor to the institute for 25 years.     TNI turns 40 in 2014 and has received many birthday wishes from social movements, academics, activists, grassroots community groups, journalists, writers and policy makers. We are proud to have worked alongside them in a struggle for a more just world and deeply touched by their praise for our work.

  18. TNI and the Pinochet precedent

    On 21 September 1976, Transnational Institute discovered the brutal cost of fighting for economic and social justice, when Chilean secret service agents set off a car bomb in Washington DC killing TNI's director, Orlando Letelier along with Ronni Moffitt, a fundraiser for the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). It has taken more than 30 years of struggle to bring some of those responsible to justice.

    Breakthroughs on the public policy front were a major highlight of 2006 for TNI. At the hugely successful Enlazando Alternativas in Vienna, attended by over 1,500 delegates from Europe and Latin America, we had the presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia and the vice-president of Cuba join us for the final session, with follow up invitations from these and other Latin American governments to further dialogue.
