In these times, the question of popular power or counter-power is riddled with uncertainty. This uncertainty sometimes comes from the lack of new ideas suitable for shaping these times, but more importantly, it derives from the unpredictable nature of the current crisis and tragedy.

These widespread and established ethical strands assert, for example, that humans are naturally egotistical, competitive and nationalistic and prone to  sexism and racism and other similar mindsets that result in polarization among non-elites and their submission to elites.

  16. The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award 2018

    The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award is intended to honour and highlight courageous and independent voices in journalism. The 2018 Award was conferred on Ulka Mahajan, one of the three founders of Sarvahara Jan Andolan. Praful Bidwai, regarded by many as one of the best investigative journalists South Asia has produced, died tragically in Amsterdam on 23 June 2015. His friends created this award to honour his legacy. Praful was a TNI Fellow and a regular visitor to the institute for 25 years. For more than 40 years, TNI’s history has been entwined with the history of global social movements and their struggle for economic, social and environmental justice.

  19. TNI and the Pinochet precedent

    On 21 September 1976, Transnational Institute discovered the brutal cost of fighting for economic and social justice, when Chilean secret service agents set off a car bomb in Washington DC killing TNI's director, Orlando Letelier along with Ronni Moffitt, a fundraiser for the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). It has taken more than 30 years of struggle to bring some of those responsible to justice.
