The Praful Bidwai Memorial Award is intended to honour and highlight courageous and independent voices in journalism. The 2018 Award was conferred on Ulka Mahajan, one of the three founders of Sarvahara Jan Andolan. Praful Bidwai, regarded by many as one of the best investigative journalists South Asia has produced, died tragically in Amsterdam on 23 June 2015. His friends created this award to honour his legacy. Praful was a TNI Fellow and a regular visitor to the institute for 25 years. In 2016, we witnessed the disturbing consequences of permanent war, neoliberal policies and globalization that have unleashed forces that are shaking the status quo at its roots. Yet while we may seem pessimists of the intellect, we make up for it with our optimism of will! We continue to draw hope from the social movements which doubled their commitment to the realization of the vision and values that TNI holds dear.
Todas Las Manos is a five part or "Pentaptych" installation. Each panel functions individually as well as a part of the larger composition. The panels are numbered from right to left. The mural celebrates human rights and global justice and serves in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Chilean Ambassador Orlando Letelier (the artists father) and co-worker Ronni Karpen Moffitt who were killed in Washington, DC on September 21, 1976. Forty years after the car bombing that took their lives, the pursuit of justice for Orlando, Ronni and other victims of the Pinochet regimes continues.

Friends of Praful Bidwai have started a crowdfunding campaign to honour his legacy, aiming to find funding for various activities, among which translations of parts of his work in vernacular Indian languages, promotion for his last book, and providing a new annual prize to promising young investigative journalists in South Asia.
in 2014, we celebrated TNI’s four decades of work with considerable pride. Heart-warming messages poured in, affirming our continued value, relevance and impact. Much has changed, but looking back we can see TNI has consistently accompanied and supported some of the most significant struggles of the times – against military dictatorships, Apartheid, nuclear weapons, Third World debt, structural adjustment programmes, corporate-led globalisation – and continues to do so.
Every day TNI staff are communicating with allies around the world, providing the information, analysis, network connections and international policy access that social movements need to challenge entrenched power and effect meaningful alternatives. 2013 saw some remarkable breakthroughs. Each one of these breakthroughs was many years in the making. These are Ideas with Impact.
TNI turns 40 in 2014 and has received many birthday wishes from social movements, academics, activists, grassroots community groups, journalists, writers and policy makers. We are proud to have worked alongside them in a struggle for a more just world and deeply touched by their praise for our work.
The theme for TNI's 2012 annual report was 'Ideas in Movement'. This reflects TNI's unique capacity to develop critical analysis that supports and is embedded in the struggles of movements for social and environmental justice.
