On 17 October 2019, representatives of coca and opium growers from Colombia and Myanmar delivered statements highlighting the situation of communities involved in the illicit cultivation of coca and opium in both countries.   8. Jakarta citizens' final challenge in the Supreme Court

    International Water Justice community sent the petition to the Supreme Court of Indonesia.  Residents of Jakarta filed a citizen lawsuit against water privatisation in Jakarta at Central Jakarta District Court in November 2012. They argued in the lawsuit that water privatisation failed to fulfil the residents’ access to safe water, caused a series of corruptions and financial harm to the public budgets. In March 2015, the court ruled in favour of the residents, annulling the contract agreement with two private water operators. It was a significant victory of people. The decision, however, was challenged by these private companies and other defendants.  Unfortunately the residents lost in the High Court in February 2016.  Jakarta people decided to challenge the High Court ruling at the Supreme Court.

Respecting this link is a fundamental principle in international law and jurisprudence, the recognition of which indigenous peoples have fought for and won and which reaffirms their right to determine the outcome of decision-making that affects them, rather than merely being involved in the process.

    Joint letter to MEPs on the EU-Peru/Colombia FTA

    As a result of continuing violence in Colombia and violation of human and labour rights, and the weakening of the Andean Community through individual EU trade agreements rather than bloc-to-bloc relations, the ETUC and TUCA call for legislators to oppose the EU-Colombia/Peru FTA. We reaffirm our joint statement in 2011 calling for a vote against the FTA on these grounds.

     
  15. Open Letter to Presidents of Council, Commission and Parliament on VolksWagen scandal

    Over 39 organisations write an open letter to the presidents of European Council, Commission and Parliament to address their concerns on the agenda in favour of cutting compliance costs and replacing the role of the public regulator with corporate co- and self-regulation. The dieselgate scandal, caused by a will to cut compliance costs, shows that the human and economic consequences of weak rules and lenient enforcement of environmental laws are enormous.
