  1. Informal Drug Policy Dialogue 2005 Budapest

    The second Informal Drug Policy Dialogue was co-hosted by the Department for Drug Strategic Affairs of the Hungarian Ministry of Youth, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. The two-day dialogue was focused on three themes: (1) harm reduction developments at the regional and UN level; (2) alternative development: dilemmas around coca and opium reduction efforts; and (3) preparations for the 2008 UNGASS review. Participants had the opportunity to exchange information and make comments from their own perspective on developments in these policy areas. The aim was to come to workable suggestions and ideas that could be used in the ongoing debate.

    budapestLa segunda reunión del Diálogo Informal sobre Políticas de Drogas fue auspiciada por el Departamento sobre Asuntos Estratégicos en materia de Drogas del Ministerio de Juventud, Familia, Asuntos Sociales, e Igualdad de Oportunidades. El diálogo de dos días se centró en tres temas: (1) desarrollos de la reducción del daño a nivel regional y de la ONU; (2) desarrollo alternativo: dilemas relacionados con los esfuerzos de reducción de la coca y del opio; (3) preparaciones para la revisión de UNGASS 2008. Los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de intercambiar información y compartir comentarios sobre su visión de los cambios acontecidos en estas áreas de políticas. El objetivo era llegar a ideas y sugerencias factibles que pudieran emplearse en el actual debate.

    Despite a federal prohibition on marijuana possession, sale, and use, Colorado and Washington recently became the first states to enact laws legalizing the recreational use of this drug. Although the Obama Administration has taken steps to attempt to deal with this evolving situation, we believe the status quo is untenable and Congress must act to provide certainty and a framework for these states moving forward. This report explains the problem and offers a solution.
