COVID-19 has laid bare many of the problems with the global food system. Even in ordinary times, migrant farmworkers live and work in overcrowded and dangerous conditions. COVID-19 has ravaged many farmworker communities. Even as states closed their borders to halt the spread of the virus, they found ways to allow farmworkers to migrate. In circumstances where undocumented workers were promised regularization, the measures introduced have been inadequate.

Ya en ‘tiempos normales’, les trabajadorxs agrícolas migrantes viven y trabajan en condiciones de hacinamiento y peligro. COVID-19 ha devastado muchas comunidades de trabajadorxs agrícolas y especialmente de migrantes. Incluso cuando los estados cerraron sus fronteras para detener la propagación del virus, encontraron formas de permitir que les trabajadorxs agrícolas pudieran llegar al lugar de trabajo para no parar la cosecha. The Covid-19 Economic Relief Plan (CERP) that the government rolled out in the last week of April is a welcome initiative for a country that is suffering from both the assault of the novel coronavirus and the massive economic impact of the nationwide lockdown that the government has imposed to stop its spread.
This pandemic health crisis impacts a world already in crisis. It will have a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable in our society and particularly in the Global South unless we mobilise and demand a just response to the pandemic. It is a wake-up call that the current capitalist economic system is not fit to protect the health of us as individuals or as societies. We must learn the lessons to defeat COVID-19, address the multiple crises we face―from accelerating inequality to the climate crisis―and build the just sustainable society we all desire.
Esta pandemia está afectando a un mundo que ya está en crisis y tendrá un impacto desproporcionado en las personas más vulnerables de nuestra sociedad, en particular en el Sur Global, a menos que nos movilicemos para exigir una respuesta justa. Es una llamada de atención de que el actual sistema capitalista no es apto para proteger la salud de nuestros individuos y sociedades. Elle examine comment certaines conditions liées au paradigme dominant de la « sécurité alimentaire » ont accentué la vulnérabilité au bouleversement économique provoqué par la pandémie. Elle analyse les impacts de la Covid-19, en particulier sur les travailleur·euse·s (ruraux·ales) et les petits·e·s producteur·rice·s alimentaires, et la manière dont les gouvernements de la région ont répondu à ces défis. Enfin, elle propose une voie pour sortir de cette crise en s'appuyant sur des modèles de souveraineté alimentaire et de justice économique.
