It was clear from the outset that this referendum would come down to a contest between fear and anger. And fear won out. Irish voters have been frightened into saying yes on the basis that the Austerity Treaty would give Ireland access to funds if we needed another “rescue” package. (The irony seems lost on the government that this would mean their policies have absolutely failed.) But the... ဆက်လက်ဖတ်ရှုပါ

Are more cuts on social spending and deep austerity measures a long term solution to the crisis in the EU? The solutions being proposed for Europe sound all too familiar to those who have lived through Latin American Structural Adjustment Programmes. Latin America is now an inspiring source of innovating thinking on alternative forms of regional integration. What can we learn from Latin America?  What does alternative regional integration mean in practice? What would a new international financial architecture look like? Is it possible to construct a system beyond the dictates of the financial market? Can we think of a way out of the crisis that is good for both people and the planet?

We live in a time of finance capitalism, when trading money, risk and associated products is more profitable and outpaces trading goods and services for capital accumulation. That is in short what people often refer to as “financialisation” of the economy. This has huge implications for where capital is invested and the everyday exposure of people to capital markets, as more and more aspects of... ဆက်လက်ဖတ်ရှုပါ

Negotiations to reduce Greek debt have been suspended after no agreement could be reached last week. At some point in the near future, Greece seems certain to default on its obligations. But the drama surrounding the talks in Athens, Berlin and Paris shows that there will be nothing co-operative about a Greek default. It is a ruthless contest dominated by the so-called troika: the European... ဆက်လက်ဖတ်ရှုပါ
