Permanent Peoples' Tribunal: Hostile Environment on Trial

This November the hostile environment is going to be put on trial.

This is a public opinion tribunal which belongs to you. Join us!

* Jurors to be announced very soon *
* Programme below *

The panel of expert jurors will be hearing evidence from migrants, refugees and organisations that work with and in solidarity with them. This is the fourth in a series of tribunals which have challenged the way in which migrants and refugees are treated within Fortress Europe. It will be looking at the hostile environment and its affects on life with a particular focus on itimpact on the right to work (or the right not to!) and the treatment one receives when working. Hostile environments have been created throughout Europe which is why previous hearings have been held in Barcelona, Palermo and Paris. All too often migrants are excluded, over-exploited and seen as disposable labour. We must come together to fight for fundamental human rights as well as identifying and promoting appropriate mechanisms for access to justice. This will also be an opportunity to celebrate resistance that has occured and is occurring including strikes and campaigns led by migrants which have caused some aspects of the hostile environment to backtrack. Join us to create a true peoples’ tribunal!

The Southern Africa Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power is holding its first session of the Permanent Peoples Tribunal on Transnational Corporations on 16 & 17 August in Manzini, Swaziland. [See the full press release (pdf)]

During the 2-day session, 10 communities from Southern Africa will present their cases – the suffering they have endured at the hands of Transnational Corporations, through the monstrous structure of corporate impunity– to a plenary of respected jurors.

The Tribunal takes place as a part of the Southern African People's Solidarity Network (SAPSN) Peoples’ Summit in Manzini, Swaziland. The Southern Africa Campaign is the regional leg of the Global Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power, Stop Impunity and Reclaim Peoples’ Sovereignty.

The Peoples' Tribunal on Transnational Corporation in Swaziland: The Case of Vale and Jindal in Mozambique.

The new Southern Africa Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power is organizing the Peoples’ Tribunal on Transnational Corporations, which is going to be held in the Bosco Skills Centre, in Manzini, Swaziland, on August 16th and 17th. The Southern Africa Campaign forms part of the Global Campaign to Reclaim Peoples Sovereignty, Dismantle Corporate Power and Stop Impunity .

The Peoples’ Tribunal, under the auspices of the Permanent People’s Tribunal on Transnational Corporations, will take place over two sessions of hearings. After this first one in Swaziland, the second will be in May 2017 in a place yet to be confirmed.

It is a space where communities that have been affected by the actions and operations of Transnational Corporations will present their cases, and where they can network and mobilise.

Two of the cases will be presented in Swaziland by Justiça Ambiental – Friends of the Earth Mozambique. Two big transnational corporations will be denounced for their coal mining activities in Tete province, with hundreds and hundreds of families affected: the Indian Jindal and the Brazilian Vale.

Real World Radio interviewed the director of Justiça Ambiental – Friends of the Earth Mozambique, Anabela Lemos, to know more about both cases and why they are going to be exposed during the Peoples’ Tribunal.

EU crisis policies put on trial

Transnational Institute (TNI), Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) and Transform!, with the support of several European networks and organisations1, are organising a People's Tribunal on EU Economic Governance on 15 and 16 May in Brussels. This event is organized in the frame of the Week of action organized by a broad coalition of social movements.

The Tribunal aims to analyse and expose the EU policy measures taken in response to the crisis, by presenting the social consequences of these measures in countries all over Europe.

The Tribunal will bring together a dozen witnesses from different European countries. In their testimonies, they will set out the social consequences of the EU's crisis policies related to an issue specific to their own country, for example:

  • Spanish anti-evictions campaign PAH
  • Greek neighbourhood solidarity initiatives
  • Portuguese dockworkers
  • German centre against precarious labour
  • Attac Hungary on the rise of neo-fascism.

The testimonies of the witnesses will be complemented by analyses of the broader European context in relation to the EU's crisis policies.

  • Jan Willem Goudriaan (EPSU) will cover the impact of EU policies on public services
  • Fintan Farrell (European Anti Poverty Network) will talk about the effects on poverty rates
  • Ronald Janssen (ETUC) will discuss the consequences for labour rights.

Furthermore, the European context related to debt, democratic principles and austerity policies will be part of the debate.

A conclusion will be provided in the form of a verdict presented as a synthesis of what has been said in the presentations by the witnesses and the rapporteurs. This will be discussed by a judges panel which includes among others economist Miren Etxezarreta and Walter Baier from the Transform! network.

Marco Buti, Director-General of DG ECFIN at the European Commission, has also been invited to provide a defense (presence tbc).

This People's Tribunal will be a unique event, providing for the first time a Europewide assessment of the realities of the EU austerity policies from the ground, across a broad cross section of witnesses and analysts from different countries and sectors. Live streaming will be arranged to move the discussions beyond the room in Brussels.

You are warmly invited to participate in the People's Tribunal on EU Economic Governance that takes place on 15 May from 14 to 17 hrs and on 16 May from 10 to 17 hrs. Please inform us whether you are coming via soltrumbovila [at] tni.org or leonie[at]corporateeurope.org.
