Tom Kramer (1968) is a political scientist with 25-years of working experience on Myanmar and its border regions, which he has visited regularly since 1993. He first specialised in analysing ethnic conflict in Myanmar and the role of civil society to promote change.
He joined TNI’s Drugs & Democracy Programme part time in 2003, where his work focused on developing a better understanding of the drugs market in Myanmar and neighbouring countries, the rights of communities growing crops declared illicit, and the relationship between drugs and conflict.
He is currently the coordinator of TNI’s Myanmar Programme, where TNI’s work on agrarian justice, alternative development and a humane drugs policy come together. He has written several articles and reports on Myanmar, including on ethnic conflict, drugs and land policy issues.
Before joining TNI, he was a writer and freelance consultant, specializing on ethnic conflict and civil society in Myanmar. He has carried out field research and written reports for a wide range of international NGOs, institutes and UN organisations.
