Deeply involved in the preparation of the 1975 military coup in Chile, the so-called Chicago Boys convinced the Junta generals that they were prepared to supplement the brutality, which the military possessed, with the intellectual assets it lacked. Here Orlando Letelier, TNI's second director, reflects on the impact their economic ideology had on Chile and by default shares pertinent observations on the legacy that persists today.
He has fought alongside guerrillas in the mountains many times in at least two continents. He's also an excellent cook. He will happily spend an entire day preparing an evening meal for friends. His name is Eqbal Ahmad. Once when he and I were cutting up vegetables for a curry, he told me a story.
The Institute for Policy Studies, which began operation in October, 1963, was established because of the need for an independent center of research and education on public policy problems in Washington.
Part of the TNI Archives (and also the papers of the TNI Washington) are kept at the IISG (International Institute of Social History) in Amsterdam and can be viewed after appointment only. Research for this section on TNI History was done by Erik Heijmans and and Mariël Otten.
The Transnational Institute (TNI) was founded in 1974 as the international programme of the Washington DC-based Institute for Policy Studies. For more than 40 years, TNI’s history has been entwined with the history of global social movements and their struggle for economic, social and environmental justice.
Out of the Women's projects of TNI emerges an autonomous feminist-socialist action group, DOMITILA, International Solidarity between Women, which aims to raise consciousness of women in the Netherlands concerning the struggle of women for independence and self-determination.
TNI turns 40 in 2014 and has received many birthday wishes from social movements, academics, activists, grassroots community groups, journalists, writers and policy makers. We are proud to have worked alongside them in a struggle for a more just world and deeply touched by their praise for our work.
TNI has published over 400 books and thousands of publications since its beginnings in 1974. In honour of our 40th anniversary we have listed some of the ones that made a big impact and in many cases have stood the test of time.
