Public Futures Reclaiming public services and building democratic alternatives

Across the world, communities are confronting the consequences of privatisation, austerity and decades of underinvestment in public infrastructure and essential services. From water and housing to healthcare, transport and energy, market-driven models have deepened inequality while weakening democratic accountability and public access.

At the same time, new forms of public ownership, community participation and local democratic transformation are emerging. Cities, municipalities, workers and social movements are developing alternatives that place care, solidarity and collective wellbeing at the centre of public life.

TNI’s Public Futures work supports these efforts by researching and strengthening democratic public services, remunicipalisation and transformative local politics. Working alongside municipalities, trade unions, grassroots organisations and international networks, we explore how public systems can be rebuilt to respond to today’s intersecting social, economic and ecological crises.
