Climate Militarism
Escalating military spending and geopolitical tensions have become one of the biggest obstacles to climate justice. Militarism increases greenhouse gas emissions, diverts critical resources and political attention from climate action, and threatens to militarise responses to climate change. Climate justice will require investment in peace to ensure that the climate crisis is not compounded by war and conflict, and to prevent the victims of climate breakdown being turned into 'threats' to be controlled by military force and state repression. TNI started exploring this work in 2011, developing a book published in November 2015, The Secure and the Dispossessed - How the Military and Corporations are shaping a climate-changed world. TNI was also instrumental in establishing the Global Working Group on Arms, Militarism and Climate Justice, which has helped put issues of militarism onto the agenda of the global climate movement.
