For more detailed background on the NATO summit, including the alliance’s evolving role, rising tensions within and around NATO, its connections to military spending, the arms industry, and nuclear weapons policy, we recommend reading the comprehensive brochure by Stop Wapenhandel. It explores the geopolitical context, from NATO’s role in Ukraine and its stance on China to internal divisions exacerbated by Trump’s return, and offers critical insights into the peace movement's response.
On June 21 and 22, the Counter-Summit Coalition for Peace and Justice in The Hague is organizing a protest and counter-summit against NATO, just before the NATO summit on June 24–25. The coalition, made up of organizations and activists, opposes the militarization of Europe and the world. While NATO leaders plan for higher defense spending, a powerful counter-message is being heard: billions spent on weapons worsen insecurity, undermine social justice, and accelerate the climate crisis.
