Phyllis Bennis on The NATO Lie: The War Machine Is Out of Control

Publication date:

TNI Associate Phyllis Bennis argues that NATO, originally created as an anti-Soviet Cold War alliance, should have been disbanded after the USSR collapsed. Instead, it expanded its power and influence, taking on an illegitimate role as a war-authorising body, bypassing the UN—most notably in Kosovo and Libya. She critiques NATO’s militaristic worldview, likening it to a hammer that sees every problem as a nail. In the Ukraine conflict, she condemns NATO's portrayal as a progressive force, warning that it increases global risk, especially through its positioning of U.S. nuclear weapons across Europe. Bennis calls for a renewed commitment to nuclear disarmament, reminding us that true safety comes not from escalation, but from enforcing international law and eliminating nuclear weapons.

A broad alliance of organisations and activists is organising a counter-summit and demonstration opposing NATO, taking place in The Hague on June 21 and 22. In the days leading up to the NATO summit, the coalition aims to amplify a critical, alternative voice. The event will culminate in a public demonstration against the NATO war summit, with a diverse range of participants expected from both the Netherlands and abroad.
