Statement of Solidarity with Venezuela 'Indignation must always be the answer to indignity. Reality is not destiny.' Eduardo Galeano

The Transnational Institute (TNI) expresses its unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of the most recent US aggression and the unacceptable detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. These actions are not only an explicit violation of Venezuela’s territorial integrity and right to self determination, it is a direct assault on international law and the sovereignty of the whole of the Latin American continent.

As enshrined in the United Nations Charter, all nations and peoples have the inherent right to determine their own political, social, and economic path without external coercion. The path to resolving political differences must be through internal dialogue and democratic processes, never through the barrel of a gun or foreign-imposed mandates. We stand firmly with the Venezuelan people in their struggle for peace and dignity, and we condemn any form of imperialist intervention, in Latin America or elsewhere.
We call upon states to uphold Venezuela’s sovereignty and right to self-determination, and the international community to mobilise and protest this imperialist, neocolonial aggression against Latin America.
