Firoze Manji is the publisher of Daraja Press and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He is the recipient of the 2021 Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista Lifetime Achievement Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association. He is a Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy, Berlin, former Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College, University of Oxford

Firoze is currently a CODESRIA African Diaspora Visiting Fellow with the Paola Freire Project of the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. He is the founder and former editor-in-chief of the prize-winning pan-African social justice newsletter and website and Pambazuka Press / Fahamu Books. Previously Firoze worked as Head of CODESRIA’s Documentation, Information and Communications Centre, Dakar, Senegal; Africa Programme Director for Amnesty International; Chief Executive of the Aga Khan Foundation (UK); Regional Representative for Health Sciences in Eastern and Southern Africa for the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC); researcher at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and lecturer in the Dental School, Faculty of Medicine, University of Nairobi. He is a member of the editorial review board of Global Critical Caribbean Thought, a member of the editorial board of Nokoko, Journal of the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, and a member of the international advisory board of the journal Philosophy and Global Affairs.  

Firoze is a Senior Research Fellow of the Global Centre for Advanced Studies. Member of the advisory board of ZANJ: The Journal of Critical Global South Studies. He has published widely, including African Awakenings: The Emerging Revolutions (co-edited with Sokari Ekine) and Claim No Easy Victories: The Legacy of Amilcar Cabral (co-edited with Bill Fletcher Jr.). He is a member of the editorial advisory board of AwaaZ Magazine (Kenya). He is a former board member of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy and Greenpeace Africa. He served as a member of the Permanent People’ Tribunal on the Role of TNCs in Southern Africa (2018-9). He is a Board member of the Association of English Language Publishers in Québec (AELAQ), a board member of GRAIN, and a board member of The Breach. He holds a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine (U. London), an MSc in Dental Public Health (U. London), and a BDS (U. Newcastle-upon-Tyne). He is Kenyan, but based in Québec, Canada.
