Katie Sandwell Programme Coordinator

Katie Sandwell joined TNI in 2016 and has worked on municipal cannabis policy, corporate concentration, and human rights, among other issues.

Katie Sandwell

She holds a Master of Environmental Studies degree from York University, Canada focusing on food sovereignty and local food movements, and has worked with and supported movements around the world. She coordinates and supports work at TNI on a range of issues related to climate, environmental and agrarian justice; public alternatives; energy democracy; land and territories; fair trade medicinal plants; agroecology and food sovereignty.

    History in Action Part 5 guides us through the multifaceted impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, underscored by increasing corporate power and social injustices—from healthcare privatization and vaccine disparities to the militarization of borders. We talk about green colonialism and the people hijacking the transition to renewable energy for their own profits. We talk about Gaza. Insights from diverse activists and scholars emphasize the need for a collective, just transition and highlight the historical and ongoing struggles for social justice, for international solidarity and for systemic change.

  • Digging Deeper Conversations on Mining and Just Transitions

    Just Transition

    We urgently need to phase out fossil fuels and reshape the global economy to deliver climate justice. But switching to renewable energy means we need new materials, and mining companies are jumping on this to make big profits, reinforcing old colonial patterns. From lithium to niobium, a new mining boom is happening, driven by speculative demand.How can we fight for a truly just transition without fueling more exploitation? Could alternative approaches reduce or eliminate the need for new extraction? What does this shift mean for frontline, rural, and Indigenous communities? Is “just” mining even possible, and if so, what campaigns or demands can support it?This new series of conversations is aiming to explore challenging questions around mining and the energy transition, and the solutions that transnational social movements are putting forward.
