Ceasefire in Gaza Justice for Palestine
From impunity to accountability: Francesca Albanese and Omar Barghouti on international law and Palestinian liberation.
Francesca Albanese and Omar Barghouti, and Angélique Eijpe will analyse Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in occupied Gaza as the most profound crisis of international law and order of recent times. They will explore what can be done practically, legally and politically, to address this crisis. Focusing on the legal and ethical obligations of states, companies, institutions and individuals, the speakers will outline some of the next steps needed to achieve accountability and meaningfully contribute to Palestinian liberation.
Background Speakers:
Ms. Albanese is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on occupied Palestinian territories, an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, as well as a Senior Advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement for the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD). Ms. Albanese graduated with honors from the University of Pisa with a law degree, and completed her Master of Laws in human rights from SOAS University of London. She worked for a decade as a human rights expert in various locales for the United Nations, including the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Omar Barghouti is a Palestinian human rights defender, co-founder of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and recipient of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award. He holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, NY, and is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy (ethics) at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of, BDS: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights (Haymarket: 2011). His commentaries and views have appeared in the New York Times, the Guardian, among others.
Angélique Eijpe worked in the Dutch foreign service for over 21 years. She resigned over the Dutch government’s policy on Gaza in the fall of 2023. Before joining the foreign service she lived, studied and worked both in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. She was posted as a diplomat in Muscat and Kinshasa, and worked on Middle East policy during her first assignment at the Ministry. Since her resignation she has worked fulltime on a personal title, and lobbying and advocacy on Gaza.
