Luciana Ghiotto Associate Researcher

Our people — Staff member

Luciana Ghiotto is an associate researcher with the Transnational Institute (TNI) and specialises on trade and investment. She is a researcher in CONICET-Argentina, and Professor of International Political Economy at Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM). Ms Ghiotto is also a member of ATTAC Argentina and coordinator of the Assembly Argentina Better Without Free Trade Agreements.

    Tratados de libre comercio (TLC)

    “La palabra más bonita del diccionario es arancel”, declaraba Donald Trump en octubre de 2014 en un encuentro en el Club Económico de Chicago.1 Meses después, esa frase representa el momento convulsionado de la economía global que estamos atravesando. Trump asumió su segundo gobierno pateando el tablero de juego de la economía global, apuntando a China al estilo de un cowboy texano. El esquema de aranceles descomunales aplicados desde el 2 de abril parece marcar que el estado de cosas no volverá a ser como antes. Incluso si en las próximas semanas algunos países logran negociar mejores condiciones comerciales, la inédita escalada de aranceles marca un cambio sustancial en el reinado de 30 años de políticas del libre comercio, y del discurso que lo ha sustentado.

    Free Trade Agreements

    In October 2014, Donald Trump described "tariff" as the most beautiful word in the dictionary at a Chicago Economic Club meeting.1  This statement highlights the current volatility in the global economy. Trump's administration significantly impacted international trade policies by imposing substantial tariffs since April 2nd, particularly targeting China. This action suggests that the previous trade conditions may not return. Even if some countries negotiate better trade terms in the coming weeks, the escalation of tariffs marks a significant change in the 30-year period of free trade policies and their underlying discourse.
